The app is now available for free on both the Apple App Store and Google Play, marking the completion of an initiative first announced by ELFIGO founder Warren Chew in July 2026. The original project was developed with the aim of improving public understanding of motorised wheelchair operation, encouraging safer mobility device use, and giving users a practical way to familiarise themselves with wheelchair controls.

Learning to operate a motorised wheelchair can take time. For a new user, simple movements such as reversing, turning through a doorway, navigating a corridor or positioning the wheelchair near a ramp can require significant practice.

The Motorised Wheelchair Trainer provides a controlled environment where users can practise these skills digitally before applying them to a physical wheelchair.

The Motorised Wheelchair Trainer contains 16 progressive lessons, taking users from basic controls through to a full obstacle course.

Users can practise:
Switching on and getting the wheelchair moving
Starting, stopping and selecting an appropriate speed
Reversing and understanding where the rear of the wheelchair moves
Forward and reverse turning
Figure-eights and pivot turns
Navigating doorways and corridors
Using ramps
Parallel parking
Reverse parking
Boarding a bus, including the ramp and wheelchair bay
Completing a final obstacle course combining multiple skills

Each lesson provides a clear objective, an on-screen coach and target areas showing where the wheelchair should stop and which direction it should face.

Designed With Accessibility and Different Users in Mind

The app has been designed to accommodate different users and preferences.

It supports English, Chinese and Malay, with users able to change their language at any time. The controls can also be configured for left- or right-handed operation, while the joystick size can be adjusted depending on how the user interacts with the screen.

Large, high-contrast screens and simple controls are used to make the training environment easier to understand.

The app also includes a Training Record, allowing users to review the amount of time spent practising, the number of attempts made and which lessons have been completed successfully. This information can also be useful for discussion with therapists or carers.

The Motorised Wheelchair Trainer is intended not only for people who are learning to use a motorised wheelchair, but also for family members, caregivers and healthcare professionals who want a better understanding of the skills involved.

Lessons are progressively unlocked so that users can build their skills step by step. There is also an option for therapists or carers to unlock all lessons when they need to demonstrate a particular manoeuvre.
