Singapore Marriage Rates Drop Sharply in 2024
The report shows a softening in long-term marriage numbers as well. From 2020 to 2024, the average annual number of marriages settled at 27,001, slightly trailing the 27,389 yearly average between 2015 and 2019.
Over the last ten years, marriage rates have steadily declined for both genders. In 2024, the rate for unmarried men aged 15 to 49 fell to 42.0 per 1,000, down from 44.4 in 2014. For unmarried women in the same age group, the figure dipped to 40.1 per 1,000, compared to 40.8 a decade prior.
The data also indicates that couples are tying the knot later in life. The median age for first-time grooms rose to 31.1 years in 2024 from 30.2 in 2014, while brides’ median age climbed to 29.6, up from 28.2. The department noted that this points to a trend toward later marriages.
Meanwhile, the number of marriages ending in separation also edged upward. In 2024, 7,382 divorces and annulments were recorded—a 3.7% rise from the 7,118 cases filed the year before.
